How it started...
OUR TRAVELS
When we travel, we often trailer the motorcycle and go camping, where we set up basecamp.
Then we take the bike on day and multi-day trips, to "see the sights" and explore.
THE IDEA
Purchase a larger enclosed cargo trailer to haul our motorcycle, bikes, kayak, paddle-board, camping gear, hammocks and whatever else we decide. It will give us an inside place to cook and sleep, without setting up a tent. Also allowing us to travel long distances, with a place to "pull over and sleep", then continue on. Our long term goal is to retire, travel out west, leisurely visit and ride in the National parks and other fascinating locations. Including visiting Kids and Grand kids in Arizona.
THE VISON
The trailer will be a self contained for off-grid. Including Solar, battery and inverter power. A trailer small enough to get off the beaten path, to dry camp closer to nature and away form "RV parks", and all the people.
Off grid power will consist of Solar/Battery/Inverter and Propane. A small generator to recharge the battery-bank, in the absence of sunlight. Also equipped with 120V 30A electrical service. For opportunities when there is electric and we need the Air Conditioner.
THE BUILD
David will use his maker-skills to build the cargo trailer into an "RV". Tina will help with painting, decorating and wherever she can. We will have a Galley, with sink, fresh water, stove, oven. A composting toilet, TV and computer, etc.
This will allow us to travel, sleep, camp or boondock (or friend-dock), with the motorcycle.
The smaller footprint of a cargo-trailer allows us to venture out to places where larger "RV rigs" could not.
Nov. 2024 - STATUS UPDATE
The trailer is 90% complete. Left to do are mostly minor storage install, trim and finish items.
The Water system, grey-water tank, Solar, Propane and Electrical are installed and working. We have used the trailer in different stages of completion. And have recently installed carpet in the back, and LVP (vinyl plank) in the Galley and Bathroom. The beds are in and work great. We put a lot of thought into how to make our trailer work in multiple scenarios. We worked out how to configure the back area to allow us to sleep without unloading the motorcycle. This will allow us to pull over anywhere along the way and sleep, at a rest area, Cracker Barrel, etc.
I'll try to get some updated photos posted soon.
We found a trailer (In Florida). These are first images of it and how it began.
We first pulled the motorcycle from Michigan to Florida in the 4x8' open trailer, picked up the cargo trailer, secured the little trailer and motorcycle, then hauled it all home. As pictured. The bike was in and out as we took a couple adventures on our way home to Michigan. We'll built it into a "Tiny-home"/Bike hauler. (See "The Build" links below)
